How can Early Intervention help?

Early Intervention means giving support to children from birth to age 3 who may be showing signs of autism or other delays. These services help children learn important skills at a young age, when their brains are growing the fastest.

Why it's Important

Getting help early can make a big difference. It can help your child:

  • Learn to talk and communicate better

  • Feel more comfortable with other people

  • Learn how to play and try new things

  • Be more independent (like eating or dressing)

  • Feel happier and more confident

What Kinds of Help are Available?

Every child is different, so early intervention can include different kinds of support, such as:

  • Speech therapy – helps your child understand and use words

  • Occupational therapy – helps with daily skills like eating, using hands, and dealing with sounds or touch

  • Behavior therapy – teaches new behaviors and helps reduce things like tantrums or frustration

  • Play-based learning – teaches through fun activities and games

Support for Parents Too

You won’t be alone. Early help also supports you, the parent or caregiver. You can:

  • Learn how to help your child at home

  • Ask questions and get advice

How It Helps in the Long Run

Children who get early help often:

  • Do better in school later

  • Make friends more easily

  • Need less support as they grow

  • Feel more confident and ready for the future

When Should I Start?

As soon as you notice something different in how your child plays, talks, or connects with others, it's a good idea to ask for help. You don’t need to wait for a diagnosis. You can start services early.

When Early Intervention isn't enough

If your child is still struggling after getting early intervention for 3-6 months— like not making progress in talking, playing, or learning or if your child seems unhappy or stressed, — it might be time to look into extra support. This could include more specialized therapies, help from a developmental doctor, or starting services through your local school district. Trust your gut — if you feel your child needs more help, it’s okay to move onto another therapy.
