Getting a Diagnosis for Autism

What Caregivers Need to Know to Start Building Services

Why is a Diagnosis Important?

A formal diagnosis is often the first step to getting support like:

  • School services (IEPs, special education)

  • Therapies (speech, occupational, behavioral)

  • Government programs (Medicaid, SSI, waivers)

  • Help for you as a caregiver

Step-by-Step: How to Get a Diagnosis

1. Know the Signs

If your child:

  • Has delays in speech or learning

  • Struggles with communication or social skills

  • Repeats actions or has strong routines

  • Has difficulty with daily tasks

…it may be time to talk to a professional.

2. Talk to Your Pediatrician or Doctor

Do not allow them to ask you to wait and see. Don't let them talk you out of it.

Ask for:

  • A developmental screening

  • A referral to a specialist (like a psychologist, neurologist, or developmental pediatrician)

3. Get a Full Evaluation

A full evaluation may include:

  • Developmental history

  • Cognitive testing (IQ test)

  • Autism-specific tools (like ADOS)

  • Speech, motor, and behavior assessments

Tip: Make sure the provider gives you a written report with a diagnosis.

Who Can Diagnose?

  • Developmental Pediatricians

  • Clinical Psychologists

  • Pediatric Neurologists

  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (in some cases)
