BHRS OR PROVIDER 50 SERVICES ROADMAP

What is Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS)?

IBHS are Medicaid-funded services, based on medical necessity, provided through trained professional support for children under age 21 with a serious emotional or behavioral disorder, to reduce or replace problem behavior with positive, socially appropriate behavior. BHRS are family and child- centered, and they can take place in variety of settings including the home, school/preschool, daycare and the community. Services are guided by the Treatment Plan which should be designed to meet the specific needs of your child. Progress is monitored with data, updated regularly and reevaluated as necessary. Your family will be assigned a Behavioral Specialist Consultant (BSC) who is a professional with a master’s degree in psychology, education, social work, or other related field and one year paid experience working with children.  BSC's do functional behavior assessments, write treatment plans, and supervise the implementation of the goals. They don't provide direct service to the child. Usually wraparound services are approved for a period of four months.

Your family will also be assigned to a Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) are professionals with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, or a related field and one year paid experience working with children. The TSS provides one-to-one intervention to the child or adolescent in the location where services are indicated. The TSS provides most of the BHRS services by working to redirect the child to more appropriate behaviors or responses, working on behavior modifications and whatever else is in the treatment plan. The TSS works under the behavior program and supervision of his/her Behavior Specialist Consultant (BSC). Both can also help teachers and educational aides new ways of working with your child.

Please note each BHRS agency is run differently and their services are also compensated differently.  When considering an agency, please ask questions about the services they won't provide when considering your child's needs and goals.

What are the benefits?

BHRS services are designed to support and educate the family to be active members in the community. Staff can teach family and client coping skills to improve behavior. Each BHRS agency is run differently so it's wise to ask lots of questions about goals what what you want to accomplish, such as, support when taking your child for a haircut or the dentist. BHRS services are available for children under the age of 21

What BHRS is not:

  • BHRS is not a substitute or supplement for speech & language, occupational or physical therapies.

  • BHRS is not a substitute for academic instruction by a teacher.

  • BHRS is not a Big Brother/Big Sister-type program.

  • BHRS is not a babysitting or cleaning service.

What goals can I expect?

Creating positive behavior supports and coping skills. Community outings like going to the zoo and assisting parents with things like waiting in line, managing behavior in public places, etc. Goals are typically based on family lifestyle and values. TIP: Ask different Lehigh Valley Businesses if they let TSS's in for free or at a reduced rate. Assisting parents with teaching ABA techniques and life skills. Potty training and other self-care skills.  The main focus is to transfer skills to parents and caregivers.
