Choosing Between Cyber School & Special School

Every child with autism is unique. What works for one may not work for another. If you're thinking about switching to a cyber school or a special school, here are some important things to think about.

1. Learning Style

  • Cyber School: Great for kids who learn better one-on-one or need a quiet, flexible space.

  • Special School: Offers hands-on learning with trained staff who understand autism.

Ask yourself: Does my child do better with fewer distractions or more in-person support?

2. Social Needs

  • Cyber School: Less social pressure and bullying, but fewer chances to practice social skills.

  • Special School: Offers social skill training and peer interaction in a safe setting.

Ask yourself: Does my child need help learning how to connect with others?

3. Support Services

  • Cyber School: May offer speech therapy or occupational therapy online, but services vary.

  • Special School: Often has built-in therapy, sensory rooms, and behavior support.

Ask yourself: What therapies does my child need during the school day?

4. Daily Routine

  • Cyber School: Allows for a flexible schedule and breaks when needed.

  • Special School: Offers a set routine, which some children with autism find comforting.

Ask yourself: Does my child do better with a set schedule or more flexibility?

5. Independence

  • Cyber School: Requires strong parent involvement, especially at younger ages.

  • Special School: Offers support from trained staff so parents don’t have to guide every lesson.

Ask yourself: Can I support my child’s learning at home every day?

6. Safety and Well-being

  • Cyber School: Removes the risk of bullying and sensory overload from busy classrooms.

  • Special School: Often provides a safer, more understanding environment than typical schools.

Ask yourself: Is my child currently feeling safe and understood in their school?

Final Thoughts

  • Cyber-schools require someone to be a Learning Coach which most likely falls on the responsibility of the parent at home. If the cyber school appoints one, it can delay admission.

The best school choice is the one that helps your child feel safe, supported and able to learn.
