What is Music Therapy?

This therapy is designed to develop interventions using music to work towards non-musical goals through a Board Certified Musical Therapist. Music Therapy is evidence based and supported by the American Music Therapy Association® whose mission is to increase awareness of music therapy effectiveness and increase access to high quality therapy. Music therapy can be done in schools, preschools/daycare, in the home, private studios, and other community locations. One misconception is that the client has to have a musical ability for it to be therapeutic. Music therapy is therapeutic for all levels of musical ability.

What are the benefits? It's very motivating for some children on the spectrum and is easily adaptable to the client's needs. It's also adaptable to complement other therapies the child is involved in. It encourages social interaction, speech, OT, and PT. It also helps with stress management. Music therapy goals can be written in a child's IEP. The provider can come to the school to conduct sessions.
