What is Apraxia?

​​How is it diagnosed? A child should be at least 3 before they can be accurately diagnosed. Prior to age 3 the disorder may be suspected, but it should not be diagnosed. A lot can change between the ages of two and three. There is no single symptom or test used for a diagnosis. A speech-language therapist looks at several of a group of symptoms and rules out other conditions, such as muscle weakness or language production problems (e.g., aphasia).

How is Apraxia treated? A child will not outgrow Apraxia. Speech language therapy is needed. A speech-language therapists will try different approaches to help the child improve their condition. Please interview the potential therapist to make sure they are familiar with treating apraxia.

Also introduce other methods of communication that work best for your child, such as, assistive technology, writing in a notebook, etc.
